In BC we’re super fortunate that both Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health offer an in school, early childhood vision test for all children in Kindergarten. Near the end of the last school year a notice came home saying that the small kid had her in school vision test completed and that her left eye showed a need for further screening and we should visit an optometrist.
Great.
I filed that bright yellow paper in the “Don’t forget to do something with this” pile, and promptly forgot about it.
I also forgot to act on the friendly reminder call that Fraser Health gave me over the summer, asking if Madison had gone for her vision test yet.
Whoops.
Better late than never, I spotted a lawn sign in the parking lot at my local Superstore promoting their Kids See Free program.
YES!
Finally time to check something off the ever growing to do list!
Superstore Optical Centres are putting the right lens on learning with the Kids See Free Program. This program, available at any optical department in the Real Canadian Superstore, ensures children ages 4-10 years receive free eyeglasses up to $49.00. This program is now entering its fifth year and has already delivered more than 5,000 pairs of glasses to Canadian kids!
The eye exam and glasses fitting process was quick and easy. Thankfully neither kid needed glasses, however that didn’t stop them from trying on nearly every pair in the place!
While neither of my kids showed any signs of vision difficulties, here are 8 signs your child may need a vision test:
- Squinting, closing or covering one eye when reading or watching tv
- Holding books close to their face
- Losing their place while reading
- Frequent complaints of headaches, nausea or dizziness
- Excessive clumsiness
- Head tilting from side to side when reading
- Having to sit at the front of the class or close to the TV
- Poor academic performance
But wait! There’s more!
I have partnered with our friends at Superstore to give one lucky reader a $50 Loblaw’s gift card! Enter below! Good luck.

Superstore has the best programs for kids! What a great community incentive. I’ve already known about this program & have tried to get my son an appointment, but right now our local Superstore doesn’t have an eye doctor in on Friday’s (which is one of our only days available.) But they assured me they will have someone very soon! Great job, Loblaws!

Very informative read. All parents should be aware if their child or children are having any visual issues. My granddaughters get their eyes checked yearly as its so very important to do so
Love the program!! I think eye sight is one of the easiest things we over look with kids.
Great program! Thanks for sharing!

Great program and giveaway, thanks for the chance! 🙂
This is a great reminder that I have to get my eyes tested again!
What a perfect program! Sometimes we forget that you only see what you see. As well as kids would not know that they have a problem with vision unless they are checked!
Thanks for your post! We just found out that our daughter needs to wear eyeglasses and your post is really helpful
I got glasses when I was really young so my children will likely need them soon too.
Great program, we do the regular 2 year eye check.
What a great program, thanks for sharing. My 14, 12 & 10 year old daughters have had yearly eye exams since kindergarten. My almost 4 year old & 2 year old have not yet had their eyes tested. Thanks for the chance to win!
Two out of my four kids wear glasses and I’ve had them since I was eight. Great post, thanks!

A great reminder not to neglect your eyes.
This is an amazing program!! 🙂
I actually didnt know this did this. Its a great idea.
Having your eyes checked often is so important..we all go once a year
Thanks for sharing!
What a great program!! Eye health is so important. I was having a cuddle and story time with my niece, and realized that she was having trouble reading the letters. I then watched her, and realized she watches TV, Tablets, etcetera, really close. I’m pretty sure her mom is taking her for an eye exam lickety split!!
I agree with everything in this article. Eyes are so important and need to be looked after from Day One!
Wow, I didn’t know Superstore had such an awesome Kids See Free program!
what a great program, thanks for sharing and the chance for a gift card.
I had horrible eyesight until I had laser eye surgery. I was actually -13 in both eyes so I couldn’t actually see unless I had my contacts in. I’ve been watching my kids closely for signs their vision is deteriorating.
Nice content and advice that parents can follow through it.
