Friday nights are sacred in our house. Not only does Friday mark the end of the work week and the start of the weekend, but it also means it’s Family Movie Night!
Nothing beats curling up under cozy blankets on the couch with the kids, fresh popped popcorn, while streaming Zootopia on Netflix — well, aside from maybe binge watching Quantico in my own bed with no one to bug me… But I suppose that’s a close second!
Popcorn and candy go hand in hand with movie night, so why not make family movie night that much more special with a DIY family movie night popcorn bar? Simple to do with minimal prep work, you likely have everything you need in your kitchen pantry already!
First things first — decide what we’re going to watch. We do this first because typically this takes the absolute longest and if we started with assembling the perfect bag of popcorn before picking the movie, we’d have nothing left by the time it started!
Netflix is streaming some great flicks right now, but despite my bid for Cool Runnings — What can I say? I have a soft spot in my heart for these guys!
Only Tangled and Zootopia made the short list, which is fine with me as both of these titles are new to Netflix in September meaning we haven’t had a chance to watch them 6,512 times yet!
Once you’ve gotten the daunting task of picking the movie out it’s Popcorn bar time!
Simply pop some popcorn — did you know you can air pop popcorn in a brown paper bag in your microwave?
Fill a few small ramekins with various tasty candies (I find the mini versions work the best)
Set up your DIY Popcorn Bar — preferably somewhere away from small hands — and get ready to top your popcorn!
Talk about skipping the middle man! Popcorn and candy all in one! For this DIY family movie night popcorn bar we used mini m&m’s, mini chocolate chips, sweet & sour Skittles (which by the way are now my most favourite thing in the entire world), and mini bone candies. Other great toppings that will definitely make the list for the next family movie night will be melted chocolate, crushed up oreos, and gummy bears! YUM!
Now top your popcorn and enjoy!
What are you streaming on Netflix this month? Do you do anything special for family movie night?
