We love movie night in our house, and everyone knows that movie night just isn’t movie night if popcorn isn’t involved. I saw a pin on Pinterest a while back that left me scratching my head in awe “you can’t do that!! …can you?!” I’m all for testing out new things, especially when the capital investment required is low, so this little experiment was a definite win-win! So, in true pinner fashion, I promptly ran out to the grocery store to pick up the required supplies to make this happen. People, when you see something amazing, you need to take action immediately… Or something like that… After promptly purchasing the required supplies, I promptly filed them in my “stuff that I plan to do some day drawer” and that was the end of that.
Well, tonight things changed. Things changed in more than one way. Minds were blown, worlds were rocked, the laws of physics were tested, things changed. I will never again buy packaged micowave popcorn. There, I said it. Aside from the fact that my under $5.00 investment will net me, at minimum, 40 bags of popcorn, my new find was easy, essentially waste free, a healthier alternative, and flat out tasted better! Here’s how you too can make easy and delicious microwave popcorn with only corn kernels and a flat bottomed paper bag (and a microwave of course!)
Step 1:
Get out your plain, flat bottomed paper lunch bags as well as a bag of plain ole’ popping corn.
Step 2:
Put 1/4 of popcorn kernels into the paper bag. note: In my first trial I used 1/2 cup and was left with 1/4 cup of un popped kernels at the end. So, by way of my stellar math skills I learned that I probably should have only used 1/4 cup of kernels. This is where consulting the original pin would have come in handy, but seriously… How could you screw this one up?
Step 3:
Fold your bag twice. My folds were rather large, probably 2 inches long which may have contributed to not all the kernels popping (I don’t know if this is true, I’m no scientist!). To increase the volume of the bag I’d probably recommend making your folds a little smaller, like 1/2 inch – 1 inch each. Also avoid use of staples, paperclips, or other metal items to keep you bag shut unless you want an expensive fireworks display in your microwave.
Step 4:
Pop that bad boy into the microwave and get ready for the magic to happen!
Step 5:
Ok, so here’s where it gets a little complicated. I have this magic popcorn button on my microwave that somehow just knows how long to cook my popcorn for optimal awesomeness (well… apparently it isn’t perfect as there was 1/4 unpopped popcorn in the bottom of the bag, but I partially think that was my fault) so I just used that. I *think* it was in there for somewhere around 3 minutes, but I seriously have no idea. I lost track when I noticed that the fold was coming undone on the bag and I was certain that popcorn was going escape the bag and start popping rampantly within my microwave note: this did not happen, all kernels were perfectly contained because I clearly have mad bag folding skills.
Step 6:
Open up and admire your simplistic, delicious, awesome popcorn. Mind blown. note: I added some melted butter and a shake of salt to up the delicious factor
Step 7:
Hand over to your excited 4 year old to enjoy during his pants optional movie night. It’s hot yo, pants are optional around here!
Enjoy!

The paper bag didn’t burn? How is that even possible? It seems to fly in the face of science. And yet, there are three people here who’ve tried this and, unless they are all withholding vital information, their paper bags didn’t burn. Are you sure your paper bag didn’t burn? 😀
