Happy National Hot Dog day!
If you know anything about my son, you’ll know that he LOVES hot dogs, so today might as well just be his birthday. He’s definitely celebrating this joyous occasion as he’s had a hot dog (or two) every day for the last couple of days.
Thankfully, our favorite Maple Leaf Top Dogs Less Salt Wieners were on sale at Walmart last week, so I stocked up.
Octo-dogs are one of my favorite lunches to make, because not only are they quick and easy to make, they’re super cute and always seem to put a smile on my kids faces. Warning: if you’ve got issues with your kids playing with their food, don’t make these. An underwater adventure always ensues during an Octo-dog meal time!
Today’s lunch consists of an Octo-dog with blue dyed pasta, fish shaped cheese, corn on the cob, crackers, fresh picked blueberries and raspberries from our favorite Kraus Berry Farms, and a fish shaped hard boiled egg, all packed in our Easy Lunch Boxes.
Hope you enjoy a Hot Dog or two today for National Hot Dog day! Bonus points if you have it at a ball park!

omg this is freaking amazing!!!! I must know how much food coloring you use for the noodles! 😀 When I went to make red and black ones at halloween i made pink and purple…

Thanks Eschelle! Even Nathan commented this morning that the ladies at daycare were going to LOVE this one and want one for themselves! 🙂
As for the food coloring, I used wilton icing color as it’s all I had on hand. It’s a concentrated paste type color and works very well. That said, Red and Black are the two hardest colors to dye things! When dying icing black I often had to start it out with a brown base to get the color to take. And red… Well, red takes a LOT of color! Also have to be aware of the color of the item you’re trying to dye. Rice would likely dye much easier than pasta because it starts white.
