It’s been almost 2 years since the purchase of my “dream” home. I say “dream” because while the house itself is stunning, the 1988 decor is not so much… In the two years that we’ve lived here, very minimal renovations/updates have taken place. This is mostly due to the fact that life with two kids and an overseas student means that things can be a little chaotic at the best of times.
Spring brings change, refresh and new life… Quite indicative of my current situation, so in light of that I’ve decided to finally bite the bullet – there’s no time like the present. The next month or so you will get a little taste of life outside of the bento box, and inside the crazy bento house as I embark on a fun DIY basement suite kitchen refresh with Rust-Oleum.
Now, here’s where I need your help!
The kitchen that I’m refreshing is a whopping 8 x 7 with no natural light… The big dilemma here is what color should I choose for my cabinets and countertop?!?!
I’m leaning towards purchasing the light kit and going with a Linen or Porcelain finish, and Java Stone for the countertop, but would love your opinion on the colors that I should go with given the size of my kitchen!

Tough. The lighter it is, the less claustrophobic it will feel. I’m leaning towards bright white or quilter’s white for the cabinets under that dark countertop, with a warm colour that totally pops in the backsplash like a sunny yellow. Blue can be done but it has to be a really intense shade to feel cheerful, and you’d still need to go white with the cupboards. The problem is those recessed fluorescents and their weird bluish haze which will clash with a warm colour.
Any chance you can yank them and replace with a lighting system that’s closer to warm/incandescent or sunlight? The LEDs I’ve got in my kitchen pot lights are pretty good. If you’re stuck with the fluorescent, I’d go bulb shopping. Oh, and if you can afford to throw in some LED pucks for under your cupboards, you won’t regret it 🙂
I like the Lined Unglazed. I think it would give light since the walls are likely to be painted light grey… I wish you success in your DIY journey!
