I live approximately 6 kms from my office. Thanks to city life, this means that I can be door to door anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes depending on traffic, weather, and all other fun commuting factors.
Typically, my mode of transport to and from the office is one of three methods:
- Personal Car
- Transit
- Carpool
I’m happy to announce that thanks to Schwinn Bikes, I’ll be functionally, and fashionably riding my new Hybrid bicycle to and from work.
While this is ridiculously exciting for me, I’m a little terrified as well. The majority of my daily commute is flat, however there’s a huge, intimidating hill just before my house.
Challenge accepted!
I’m a tad embarrassed to admit that I have not owned a bike at any point during my adult life. I’ve always made sure my two kids have been adequately outfitted in appropriate gear, with me doting behind them on foot. Well that day has changed! You can add a 4th mode of transport to my list: Bicycle.
Having not owned a bicycle since my youth, I had some serious figuring to do in deciding on the right bike for me. Here are 3 tips for picking the best bicycle type for you:
What’s it for?
No two bikes were created equal. When selecting the right bike for you, really think about what you’re going to be using it for. Ask yourself where you’re planning to ride, and why. If you’re primary purpose is commuting, look at your commute – Are the roads paved or unpaved? Do you have hills to contend with or long flat stretches. Gear
A helmet likely saved my life after a huge bike crash when I was a kid, therefor I can not stress the importance of a properly fitting helmet when riding a bike. Canadian Tire has a huge selection of helmets that will suit both your functional, and fashionable needs! If you’re using your bike for commuting consider adding a rear bike rack and bike bag to carry your necessities. If mountain biking is your thing, perhaps a Water Bottle and Cage to stay hydrated or an Air Pump Bike Seat to protect your tush!
Fit
Almost as important as selecting the right bike, is to make sure it fits! The fit of most bikes are easily adjustable. The best way to determine any changes that need to be made are simply by riding the bike! A good baseline starting point is to make sure that you’re getting proper leg extension. When the bike pedal is at it’s lowest point, your leg should be almost fully extended with a slight bend at the knee, and your feet should not reach the the ground when you’re seated. Above all else however, do what is most comfortable for you! Don’t be afraid to adjust your bike on the fly as what was comfortable at one time may not stay that way.
