Every January, I give something up for one month.
It started 2 years ago with alcohol, last year it was gluten, and this year it’s frivolous spending AKA… Shopping.
After being accused of being an impulsive buyer, or perhaps even addicted to shopping, I gladly accepted the challenge of giving up shopping for the whole month of January. Anything that wasn’t deemed as an essential purchase would either have to wait until February, an alternative found, or not purchased at all.
Not a problem! I’ve totally got this.
Half way into the month and I’ve found this to be a relatively simple challenge, in fact, it’s resulted in me really diving deeper and evaluating where my hard earned money is going each month, and finding looking for other ways to reduce my spending without losing. One of the expensive, yet empty bills that I pay each month is my cable bill. As my kids are getting older and gaining interest in activities outside of traditional TV shows, I find that the majority of the screen time we have is spent watching movies or series on Netflix. My PVR is jam packed with shows I never seem to have time to watch, and social media has in many ways taken over my 6:00 news stream. As a busy mom with busy kids, traditional Cable just doesn’t fit in the box for me anymore. So that’s it. I’ve decided to cut the cord on cable, and I’m sharing with you 3 money saving ways to ditch the cable.
- Invest in a Smart TV – Many TV’s now a days are WIFI enabled which allows them to connect to the internet, download and use Apps, and integrate with many features you may have known and loved with traditional cable.
- Make your current TV Smart – Apple TV has been a game changer for us. The small, interactive box gives you every thing you once had with cable but more – better! With access to the best content – TV, Movies, Sports, and more you’ll never miss your old cable. Download the Netflix App right to the home screen and you’re set for your next family movie night!
- Get Streaming – There are a few options out there, but we’re huge Netflix fans. Not only do we have easy access to all our favourite movies and shows at home, we can also access via the web or on our smart phones/tablets.
If getting rid of cable isn’t quite yet in the cards for you (believe me, it was a nerve wracking jump for me!), consider calling your cable provider and finding out if there are more economical options available for you to help cut down on that monthly bill.
