Ok.
I didn’t just figure this out… I mean, I have after all had kids now for 4 and a half years.
I should be a pro by now…
Should be…
You see, the problem with kids is that they’re just like men just when you think you’ve got them figured out, they go and do something strange, something out of the ordinary, something just weird. These abnormal behaviours leave you scratching your head and rationalizing how “they must have gotten that from their father”. At least that’s what I do.
Don’t get me wrong, our kids are great, they have their moments, but for the most part they are a breeze. This has been especially true in the sleep department. With the exception of a few hiccups along the way, both kids have slept peacefully through the night almost every night, since the day we brought them home from the hospital. The infamous crib to toddler bed transfer was also a breeze in our house. Now, these days with a 3 and 4 year old, nap time can be a bit of a battle, but I shouldn’t complain as a)naptime still exists in our house, and b) it’s typically anywhere from 2-4 hours long… I know, I give you permission to hate me…
So as I mentioned, there have been a few sleep “bumps in the road” so to speak. We went through a fantastic time with the oldest child, right around the time I returned to work, where he was up screaming bloody murder like clockwork from 10 o’clock pm every hour. on the hour…
EVERY
DAMN
NIGHT
Mr.MoreThanYourAverageMom and I took shifts. Night one he’d get up every hour, and night two was mine, and so fourth. This made for sleepless nights and miserable, exhausted days for us, although screamer child seemed unphased by the previous nights shenanigans each morning… Yay…
Thankfully this pattern skipped the small child. She did however go through a phase where she would come into our room during the night and snuggle in with us. She wasn’t the idea bed sharing partner, but so long as she wasn’t screaming her face off, we dealt with it.
Fast forward to now. We’ve moved into our new house, both kids are in their own rooms next door to each other and we’re in a good sleep zone. Boy gets up earlier than we’d like, but aside from that, all is well. With the weather being a little cooler at night, I check on the kids before I go to bed to make sure that their blankets are on and they’re warm and toasty.

Morning 1:

Small kid found sleeping on the floor, mostly in the hallway, with her head inside her brother’s bedroom door.
Morning 3:
Small kid found sleeping on the floor, mostly in her brother’s room with just her feet in the hallway.
Our carpet is soft, but I can’t imagine it’s any better than sleeping in say, your bed, but to each their own I guess. I joked with Mr.MoreThanYourAverageMom, that by the end of the week she’ll be snuggled up in bed with big brother.
I rest my case…

When my 9yo was about 14 months old, she would actually come out of her room and fall back to sleep on the top step of the stairs. It scared the crap out of me the first time she did it. Our bedroom was on the main and hers was upstairs…so I guess she just liked being a little closet to us. Thank god she never fell down! Good luck and happy sleeping!
