Raising kids is hard, raising kids as a single mother is also hard, but making sure that you’re raising a strong and confident daughter is the hardest!
Smalls was born with a congenital heart defect, so from the very start she’s had to overcome a lot of challenges. Her small stature being the most noticeable challenge of them all, and as a 5 foot 3.5 inch tall woman myself, one that I’m no stranger to!
Between being regularly mistaken for a child much younger than her, especially in comparison to her much taller brother, to constantly falling short, literally, for many activities, keeping her spirits up and and assuring her that she can do whatever her heart desires is often top of mind for me as her mom.
Studies have shown that girls as young as six are influenced by gender stereotypes! Hello influential media! This study also shows that the entertainment role models these young girls choose can have a lasting effect. No kidding right?!
No worries! Netflix has you covered when it comes to girls who mean business and that’s something all kids can get behind! Whether it’s Violet’s quick wit (Smalls favourite), Elena’s activist mentality, or Deidra & Laney’s unorthodox thinking, there’s something for every girl to relate to. Strong female characters aren’t just important for girls either! Boys, my boy included, are surrounded by strong women both in life, and on the screen. These boys are growing up with Eleven saving the crew and Tip showing that true friendship knows no bounds!
Having a host of strong female leads literally – at my fingertips makes teaching girl power, and empowering both of my children – female and male, that much easier.
I know I’ve succeeded when I can hear my littlest kid shout “don’t underestimate me!” while conquering various tasks that someone has told her she can’t do.
Who was your childhood entertainment idol?
