If you’re in B.C. and you’re reading this, you’re one of the lucky ones who still have power.
If you’re outside of B.C. you’ve likely read about the EPIC storm that knocked out highways, uprooted trees, desecrated flags, crushed cars, and SkyTrains and turned everyday commuters into DIY street cleaners (only in Canada…)
Last Saturday brought one of the biggest storms Metro Vancouver has seen in over a decade. Strong winds and heavy rain meant total chaos in all surrounding cities.
My kids and I were in the car en route to our hopefully fully powered home when I shit you not, a Rubbermaid style small shed picked up and blew right past us! My “HOLY COW!” was followed up with a “we’re not in Kansas anymore Toto!” to which received mild laughter from the back seat and puzzled faces.
“Who’s Toto, Mom?”
Wait… What?!
“You know! TOTO! Dorothy, Tin Man, The Lion, THE WIZARD OF OZ??”
“Nope!”
Damn it! Clearly I’m failing as a parent if my kids have made it to 6 and 7 years old and have not seen The Wizard of Oz!
So in the interest of rectifying my parenting faux pas, and to best hunker down until this storm blows over, I’ve created a list of 6 Netflix Approved flicks to help you weather the storm:
Oz the Great and Powerful
In this prequel to The Wizard of Oz, a circus magician arrives in Oz and transforms himself into the wizard the residents have been hoping for. If you’re gonna start, why not start at the very beginning. Grab your popcorn and hope that your power lines stay up so you can enjoy all 2 hours and 10 minutes of James Franco… err… Oz…
Lightning Point
After being stranded in the coastal town of Lightning Point, two alien girls from another galaxy — Zoey and Kiki — find an ally in a shy earthling. With 26 episodes in season 1, this feel good series will outlast the storm.
Sharknado
When a hurricane swamps Los Angeles, thousands of sharks are swept up in tornadoes and deposited all over the city, where they terrorize residents. The Sci-Fi Thriller will leave you thankful that rain is the only thing falling from the sky outside your window. Feeling daring? Pop an extra bag of popcorn and tune into Sharknado 2!
Storm Surfers
Surfing legends Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll team with meteorologist Ben Matson to track down and conquer the biggest waves in Australia. Leave your wetsuits and rain gear in the closet and live out the excitement of chasing the storm from the comfort of your living room! This documentary is sure to thrill and excite.
Power Rangers Ninja Storm
When the elite warriors from the Wind Ninja Academy are captured by the evil Lothor, Shane, Tori and Waldo become Wind Power Rangers to fight back. While the kids think they’re watching the the Rangers kick some bad guy butt, they’re actually learning about friendship, teamwork, and girl power, this series is sure to be a hit with the kids.
Z Nation
A team embarks on a perilous cross-country mission to transport one man who survived a deadly zombie virus, hoping he holds the key to a vaccine. Just be thankful it’s the wind knocking at your door as opposed to deadly zombies. If scary action and adventure is up your ally, you’ll settle in nicely to this series and the storm will be over before you know it!
