Coming into parenthood, I had a huge laundry of things that I would absolutely not do as a new parent. I’m sure we’ve all had similar lists. Whether they be things our parents did that we swore we wouldn’t be caught dead doing to/with our children, or bahaviours modeled by other parents that we’ve identified as wrong, we all have some semblance of this list.
- My children would not get soothers
- My children would not wear those backpack leashes in the malls
- My children would not co-sleep with me
- My children would not watch any TV
That’s why yesterday, when I read this article, I was beyond floored…
Or was I?
I’ve seen a lot of crazy shit over the years, but this takes the cake.
Seriously parents? WTF? Chalk this up as another epic parenting fail and a vote in favour for the requirement to have licenses or mandatory classes in order to reproduce.
(incase you’re too lazy to read the article, or this picture doesn’t tell 1,000 words for you, this is a parent allowing their child to urinate into a garbage can in one of the largest malls in Richmond, BC)
What’s your position? Is there any reason why this could be considered acceptable behaviour?

I haven’t gotten to peeing in the garbage can level, but I am not far off. My little one potty trained early and with no help from me, but when she says she has to go, she has to go IMMEDIATELY. We have peed in corners of most every park in Headington. I can kinda understand where this mom is coming from….

Oh don’t get me wrong, my kids are very much the same (my daughter especially!) but on the rare occasion where we couldn’t make it to a bathroom I always try to ensure it’s a private place…

Oh My. I did see that and wondered where it might be happening. You know peeing and potty training varies by culture. Personally I have had to pee so bad that the nearest potted plant looked like a good option.
Ya… that is a bit much.

Have visited to China and their stance on children’s urination and defecation in public is completely different to Western habits. Most children wear split pants and just go on the street when nature calls. Interesting for a Westerner to see for the first time for sure š

I was going to say this too. It looks like the people in the photo are possibly Chinese. I live in SE Asia and it’s not uncommon to see it here too. My own boy has peed in a variety of places, some that I’d rather he didn’t, because he learned to pee outside. As soon as he learned to recognize he needed to pee, I started teaching him to run to the nearest toilet. He’s going in the right places now. On the plus side, kids get potty trained a LOT earlier than American kids because they don’t learn to ignore their urges and pee in their diapers.

We just saw a parent let a kid pee beside their parked truck in the grocery store parking lot. We then got to step over it on our way to the store doors. Because the public bathroom was 50 feet away. Asshats.
